Sternwheeler Akasla, c1936.
The sternwheeler “Aksala” with a large supply laden barge tied off it’s bow. The barge appears to be carrying fuel drums. A “Royal Mail” flag flies at the bow of the sternwheeler with a “B. Y. N Co.” (British Yukon Navigation Company) flag flying on the pilot house. The Aksala, first named the Alaska weighed 642 tons. It was built by the American Yukon Navigation Company in Whitehorse in 1913. It was transferred to Canadian register and renamed the Aksala. It operated for the British Navigation Company until 1952 and now sits on mile 913 on the Alaska Highway. At one time it was used as a dining lounge.
